Attorney Profile

Philip R Cockerille

The attorney has pursued lawsuits and settlements in many areas of the law. For example:

  • A van driver stopped at a red light. He looked to his left for oncoming traffic. He failed to look to his right, where a bicyclist was riding across the street in front of him. He rolled forward, knocked over the bicycle and pinned the rider's leg between the van and the road. The bicyclist recovered very substantial damages.
  • On an icy road, a driver was going too fast and ran into the car in front. In that car in front was a woman who had previous open heart surgery. Her car was pushed off the road and over a curb. The force of this broke the wires that held her chest closed. She had surgery to repair the wires, but then developed staph infection and had more surgeries. She recovered the policy limit of insurance.
  • Two passengers with a teenage driver, who drove off the road and rolled the car, were thrown out of the car and suffered multiple fractures. They recovered the insurance limit.
  • An insurance company hired engineers to say that auto accidents were too minor for the insureds to have any injury. The attorney filed suit against the insurance company and obtained expert reports which convinced the insurance company to pay the bills to the doctors and additional damages to the insured.
  • A doctor performed 13 surgeries on a woman's hand and wrist. Although the doctor was well-intentioned, his actions caused a painful condition called reflex sympathetic dystrophy. The doctor's insurer had to pay the woman for this permanent injury.
